My Alice Costume

I have been obsessed with Alice in Wonderland for as long as I can remember. After reading the books and watching numerous film versions, I have become quite fond of the darker versions of Alice. The Disney version is way too sugar coated as it is with all of its renditions of fairy tales. My favorite portrayal of Alice is from the EA game, American McGee’s Alice. After a long time of collecting just the right items, my costume is complete.

Certain characteristics set the game version of Alice apart from others. In the game Alice has returned from wonderland and is back with her family. Alice's house is burned down by an accidental fire, killing her family, and leaving her as the only survivor. Due to her survivor's guilt, she tries to commit suicide (bandages can be seen on her wrists), and becomes catatonic. She is institutionalized and ten years later, the White Rabbit summons Alice to aid a radically altered Wonderland, which became a twisted version of itself as it came under the despotic rule of the Queen of Hearts (this description is taken from Wikipedia). Alice had an array of weapons she uses to fight her enemies. She starts out with a knife, then a deck of playing cards, and so on. Her apron is splattered with the blood of her victims, her boots heavy with buckles, and a skull sits in the middle of her apron bow in the back.

It started with the dress. All of the “Alice” dresses that I could find were too light of a blue and the apron was always too frilly. I finally found a dark blue dress on eBay and my mom made an apron for it that is perfect. Next was to stain my mother’s work with blood splatters. I used stage blood and a large paint brush to splatter the blood all over. I found a wooden knife at a Halloween store and painted it to look a little more realistic. I added blood along the edge for further effect. I also stumbled upon a giant deck of cards in my searches. I stuck a few of them in the pocket of my apron to use as weapons as in the game. After a few failed attempts of different skulls for the bow, I finally found a decorative skull doorknob cover made of soft latex. After a few cuts and some Velcro, my bow accessory was perfected. Alice wears an upside-down horseshoe necklace and huge buckles on her tall black boots. Finding a small horseshoe was simply luck. My mom found a Christmas ornament that had a 3 small horseshoes on it. I took it apart, painted it silver, and fastened one to a necklace chain. I didn’t want to spend money on the Hot Topic looking boots that Alice wears and I already had some tall black boots so I just had to find the buckles. I was in Santa Barbara when I came across a Collectables type store with all kinds of random objects. They had drawer pulls, hinges, glass, and all kinds of collected items. With all of the cabinet hardware I found something that I could use. I am not sure what these bulky silver things were intended for, but I easily sew them onto elastic straps that I could slip on over my boots to look like buckles. I think it worked quite well. The last thing I needed to complete my outfit was some sort of purse. Alice doesn’t wear one, obviously, and I wanted to stay true to my costume. So I went to Toys R Us and bought a white stuffed rabbit. I cut him open along the seam on his back and took out most of the stuffing. I slipped in a drawstring bag, pulled the strings through holes that I cut and cinched it tight. I could fit some money and my camera in it so it was just the right size. As people would walk by me on the streets during Halloween, I would slip my hand into the legs of the rabbit and use him as a puppet. It was very fun messing with people.

I have now been Alice for 4 years straight. I think next time I might have to be Alice from the new Burton film coming out March 5th, 2010. Thank you for your interest in my costume. Please feel free to ask me any questions!

Finger Painting is NOT just for kids

Have you ever felt paint in between your fingers? How about your toes? You might be thinking “eeewwwwww,” but I highly advise trying it at least once in your life. I love paint… I love painting. But I am not very good with a paint brush. I find that my hands work better.
From my art

This is a painting that I did using just my hands, feet, black and white paint. I like to hang it behind a door or in the back of a closet. I think it looks pretty abstract and kewl… but most might see it as a busy kids painting. I also tend to take my crazy drawings and play with them using photoshop. I like the photoshoped version a little better.

Magnetic Fun - gifts

Lately I have been discovering some easy and fun craft projects that I can do without spending a bunch of money. One of them is marble magnets. You've seen them, I am sure. They make great gifts and are fun to make.

From Magnets

All you need are some clear glass gems that are flat on one side ( I like to use 1.5 inch Marble Accent Clear Gems from Richards arts and Crafts), clear drying glue, and some magnets (I like the 1" wide magnetic strip roll which I cut the circles out of).

It's pretty self explanatory... but all you do is select the image you want to use and place it under the flat marble to see how it looks. Once you have decided on the image, cut it out to fit the marble, glue the image side to the flat side of the marble, and wait for it to dry. Once dry, glue your magnet to the back and wait for it to dry. Wahla! Custom magnets!

Margarido Tree Project

I used to live in a crazy 5 bedroom 4 story duplex on a hill. The structure of the house made it so that there were storage rooms on the lower levels against the hill. While my roommates found these storage rooms to be a bit creepy, they were where I found my solitude. I used one of them as my art studio and workout room. The walls were a little too plain so I decided to add some color. And then it turned into a full blown art project... which is quite normal with me.

My Latest Project - Painted furniture

I love painting furniture. I am not very good at painting, but I love the feeling. It is very relaxing to paint for hours... to see your image come alive in front of you. Or maybe I am just a hippie.

The first piece of furniture I painted was in high school. It was a stripped end table that I bought at a garage sale for $5. I spent many insomniac nights painting in my parents garage. Then in college I decided to fix the one imperfection on the design and I repainted the whole thing. I ended up getting a piece of glass cut to put on the top since the wood was uneven and warped. I thought it turned out pretty good and I still use it till this day.

This latest project was a hand-me-down dresser that my boyfriend uses. It was white and very used. We decided that the color scheme should match my comforter and I tried to stick with a simple design. What started out as simple turned into an art project.

RIP Shoe Tree

One of my favorite places to vacation is "the river." My family goes camping every Oct and June on a 13 mile strip of the Colorado River south of Lake Havasu. There we jet ski, drink, play poker, float… what ever we want.

On my way home from the river, I make one stop on Highway 62 before I get to "civilization." In the middle of the desert alongside the highway, there is a lone tree covered in shoes. I have made a tradition of stopping at "The Shoe Tree" and taking a few photos. This is a way of bringing an end to a refreshing vacation of relaxation, water sports and partying. I planned on doing this for the rest of my life.

The first photo I took was on my way home from an Oct trip in 2001 with my roommate and close friend Jake.

He was barefoot because he was looking for shoes to replace his worn out pair… he was successful in finding a pair better than his!

In 2002 I stopped by myself and decided to try to frame the tree the same each time.

Obviously people thought that just shoes wasn't enough, I've even donated a bikini top.

The next year, Kelly and I stopped to find a surprise. Someone had burnt all of the shoes off the tree. But that wasn't enough to stop dedicated river rats. It was starting up again in June of 2003.

A year later, in June of 2004, it was full blown again.

So this October trip I had my camera ready and prepared to stop even though I was in the middle of a lighting and thunder storm. My jaw dropped and I almost cried when I saw what was left.

Just a pile and a few burnt shoes.

I, like many other river rats have been enjoying this tree for a long time and am very sad to see this. I have been stopping there for 5 years and have been able to share it with some close friends.

When I got home, I decided to do some research and find out why. On uslitter.org, there are a few reports of litter being a problem near the tree beginning in 2002.

"Although 5 bags of litter were picked-up over the span of 90 minutes, lots of litter remains. There are numerous spots along CA Hwy-62 that require a visit from the Litter Patrol."

In a report in March of 2004 it states "USLitter.org re-visted the Tamarisk Shoe Tree to see how it look after experiencing a on fire. It was sad to the see the hearty tree in such a sorry state. It may be best for the Tamarisk Shoe Tree to go away because the desert around it is full of litter." (I left the spelling mistakes in the quote)

This is the only clue I could find that leads to the reason the Shoe Tree was destroyed. Where the tree was remains a pile that was clearly bulldozed. Someone put a lot of effort into the death of a creative communal outlet.

Upon first reading this, one might think "well, if it was causing a litter problem, then good." But for those who have traveled this Highway, we see litter the entire 57 mile stretch. It may be a bit more near the tree, but a nice first step in preventing it would be to but up a sign near the tree and a trash can or two. I have personally never thrown trash out of my car on Highway 62 and I don't see why a stop at the shoe tree would make you want to clean out your car. There is a gas station right before you get to I-10.

Regardless of why or how, I am very sad to see the end of such a strange phenomenon.
